Update on my thermometer: the batteries I bought were crap, but now it works. Says it’s 80’ in my apartment right now, while it’s only 81’ outside (at 1:00 in the afternoon). It gets pretty hot around here, but the fan helps immensely.
Last night we went over to Ben and Allison’s house, 2 of the new teachers. We had a couple of drinks, then went out to a small bar and had another drink or too. It wasn’t a drunk night by any means, but it’s fun just hanging out with these people. We always seem to strike up the most interesting conversations. It’s been a great week so far with all the new teachers. Without them, I’d probably be pulling my hair out because of my apartment situation.
Speaking of which… I tried to move my new “bed” (aka couch) into my bedroom, but it won’t fit through the door. Also, the 2 couches (aka my beds) in my room won’t fit out the door. So I guess I’m going to be sleeping in my living room. I think that was the final straw. I’m going to go talk to someone tomorrow about getting a new apartment. I just don’t want to deal with all these problems on a day-to-day basis. I really haven’t had much time to talk to the school yet, though, so maybe we can figure something out. I initially liked the idea of living far away, so I’d have to walk about 20 minutes to get to school everyday, which will be great for staying in shape (especially in the winter). But it’s frustrating if I want to do something at school, I have to walk waaaaaaaaaay down there. Even last night, I was hesitant about meeting up with the other teachers, because they are so far away. I find myself not wanting to hang out with them, purely because they are far away. We will see what happens though…
Today is a Muslim holiday (the last day of Ramadan). It's like their Christmas, from what the locals tell me. There is nothing going on, no stores open, little traffic. It’s a ghost town out there. We’re going to have game night at Joe and Courtney’s house tonight. Then tomorrow is a workday at school. We will also get our bank accounts set up in the morning. I’m looking forward to getting my classroom set up and everything ready for Monday. Then Thursday through Saturday this week we’re going on a retreat-like trip, with all the teachers, for orientation and rules and things like that. I guess we’ll be doing some hiking. It’s at a place called “Boga” and it’s up in the mountains somewhere. Should be fun!
PS-They love the songs “Danza Kudoro” (my Guate peps know what I’m talkin’ ‘bout) and “Forever Young” by Jay-Z. Oh, also, at that mall yesterday… I heard “Country Grammer,” unedited, by Nelly. It’s funny hearing them swearing like crazy, dropping f-bombs and n-bombs, and the people have no idea what they’re saying… J
