I didn’t really talk much about what we did on Sunday. We did a little tour of the city. We went to this park with the largest swimming pool I’ve ever seen. Most of you are probably like “Meh, yeah, ok… whatever…” but seriously, it is HUGE! Bigger than an American football field, no doubt. I’ll get pictures up sometime soon and show you.
In this park we ate lunch, and then went and saw some Serbian barracks and bunkers from the 1990s. They were destroyed during the genocide by NATO (probably by the US, since we’re super cool). But there were mines around them, so they had “Warning: Minefield” signs all around. It was pretty neat to be near all this stuff. They said as long as you don’t go venturing off into the woods, you’ll be just fine. Just stay on the trails. So we did.
Today we met at the school for orientation. I don’t think this week is going to be too hard for me, since everything I need I’ve pretty much got in my head. What to do the first week of class, what to put on the syllabus, etc. I’m just going to use what I did in Guatemala. This school sounds like it’s a little more on task and efficient than Interamericano, but we’ll see over time what happens. I found out that one of the new teachers, Natalie, is going to be the other World History/US History teacher with me, which is great because A: She’s from Wisconsin and is a huge Badgers/Brewers/Packers fan, and B: She seems like an easy person to work with and get along with, so there won’t be any major problems I assume.
Still haven’t got my classroom yet. Since tomorrow (Tuesday) is the last day of Ramadan, everything is going to be shut down. I’ll probably go into school and get some stuff done. About the internet… didn’t get time to do that today. By the time we tried, the guy had left, so we have to push that off to Wednesday now. We went shopping at a big mall today, similar to a US mall. Bought a bunch of household goods and food. Tonight, since my washer is broke, I went to another teacher’s house to do laundry. Oh, good news about my bed! I think I mentioned this earlier, but my bed is a couch that folds down, like a futon, but not nearly as nice and comfortable. And it’s really hard. HOWEVER, the “couches” in my living room fold out the other way, kind of like a sleeper sofa, so anyway, now I can just use one of those in my bedroom and it’s actually really comfortable. Much softer than the old bed. So I’ll be able to sleep good tonight. My sleep schedule is still messed up a bit. Went out for some drinks til about 3 am last night, and woke up at 9 am and couldn’t get back to sleep. If you know me, you know that is NOT like me at all. A few of us teachers we having such a good time, we just didn’t want to stop talking to each other. It was great. I only had 2 beers too, so it’s not like I was drunk or anything. It was cold going home though. We took a cab, even though it would’ve been fine to walk. It was just so late. Anyway, it was in like the lower 60s. I kind of wish I had a jacket.
Today, when I looked at my indoor/outdoor thermometer, it said inside my apartment it was 86’. UGH! SOOOOO dang hot. I hate it right now. The nights are cool, but the days get so hot. I’m kind of looking forward to winter, so I don’t sweat my butt off every day. And with the water being shut down between 10 pm and 6 am, I can’t take showers when I usually want to.
