Last night we had a “game night” at Joe and Courtney’s house. Pretty much all the new teachers were there. I'll describe each one of them for everyone, just so you can get an idea of my friends for the next 2 years:
Mark: middle-aged man from Arizona, always has something witty to say, used to be a comedian
Allison: late 20s, from Michigan (Michigan St. fan), thinks I have a “Michigan” accent, likes salads, very gullible
Ben: early 30s, Allison’s bf, originally from Boston (Northwestern fan), studied journalism, trivia buff, Settler's of Catan expert
Joe: 29 years old, from Michigan (Wolverine fan), he’s gunna be my “sports” guy to talk to I have a feeling, thinks Denard Robinson is a god, likes the change the lyrics to songs and use them in everyday conversation
Courtney: 26 years old, Joe’s wife, from Iowa (Hawkeye fan), hates Northwestern cuz they apparently beat Iowa every year, Ricki Stanzi’s biggest fan
Natalie: fresh outta college, from Tomahawk, WI, went to UW-Madison, looking forward to watching Packers/Badger’s game with her, she also is the other HS History teacher, likes to “ice” people
Flanza: early 20s, local ESL teacher, extremely positive attitude and wants to help Kosova change for the better more than anyone I’ve met, favorite US president is Abraham Lincoln, big Milwaukee Brewer's fan
Kristen: originally from Texas, early 30s, brings a lot of energy to the party, enjoys saying “Hook ‘em horns”
There are a few other new teachers, but that’s most of us. The other new ones are: Julie, from Canada--used to live here so she knows a ton of good places to eat (2nd Grade teacher) and David--seems like he’s been everywhere in the world teaching, has been to all 50 states (MS Social Studies teacher). I added all the Big 10 schools in there just to show you how interesting of a season it’s going to be. These people actually really follow college football, so it’s going to be pretty sweet watching the Badgers kick all their asses. ;-)
Anyway, at game night we played this game called “Settlers of Catan.” I first played it in Guatemala, my friend Tom had it, and I LOVED it. It’s a strategy game for 4 people. We played in teams since we had like 7 of us there. It got kind of long, cuz people kept drinking and drinking, and getting slower and slower at playing, but I enjoyed it. Then we played the ever-popular “Catch Phrase.”
Today is going to be a workday at school. I’m hoping to get A LOT done, since this might be the only day I’m in my classroom before school starts on Monday, since we’re leaving for our retreat tomorrow morning.
